God on the Job:Christianity, Work and Business

On Saturday, April 21, 2007 the fifth symposium in Christ Lutheran Church's Christian View Series featured presentations geared around Martin Luther's theology of vocation.  The three papers presented were: Is Greed Good? Christianity and Captialism by Raymond J. Keating; Luther's Two Kingdoms, Vocation and Education by the Rev. Martin Conkling, Professor, Concordia College, Bronxville, NY; and Christian Faith and Life by Pastor Fleischmann.

Ray Keating showed movie clips of three different films illustrating points made in his presentation.

On Friday, October 20, 2006, Christ Lutheran Christian View Series presented "The Reformation: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow."  Guest lecturers were The Rev. Dr. Alan G.R. Steinberg, Professor Emeritus, Concordia College, Bronxville, NY; and The Rev. Larry Vogel, S.T.S., Pastor of Martin Luther Chapel, Pennsauken, NJ.

Dr. Steinberg's presentation outlined the historical setting of the Reformation and explained some of the major events that transpired bringing the Lutheran Church into being.

Pastor Vogel spoke of the institutional church always being in need of reformation, distinguishing it from the Una Sancta, that Bride of Christ, that never needs reforming. He showed the tension between the two poles of those churches considered Catholic (the Roman Catholic Church and Orthodoxy) and those considered Evangelical.  Lutheranism is in the midst of this tension and has the gift of celebrating the best of both poles, and is in a position to offer much to the Church at large.

Over 80 people attended this symposium and banquet and were blessed by both presentations.

The Role of Christian Education

Christ Lutheran Church's Third Christian View Symposium, February 18, 2006

The Role of Christian Education, Christ Lutheran Church's third symposium was held on Saturday, February 18.  Those who attended realized how much those who didn't missed.  Shown above is The Rev. Andrew Jagow, Pastor of Calvary Lutheran Church, East Meadow NY. In his presentation, "Kids Want to Talk About the Faith (No, Really!)" Pastor Jagow discussed the blossoming youth program at Calvary, stressing how teens really need to feel a part of a group.

Headmaster Robert E. Gustafson, Jr. of the Stony Brook School discussed "Character in education."  He explained how postmodernism (a topic addressed at the last symposium) affects our children today and stressed how important community is. He also noted how teens of today are interested in ritual and other matters of the faith.

Brother Kenneth M. Hoagland, S.M., principal of Kellenberg Memorial High School (Uniondale) discussed the cancellation of Kellenberg's prom due to the outrageous after-prom events, noting that the "thousand dollar per person" afterparties were a flaunting of affluence.  In spite of a lot of pressure to have the prom, Brother Hoagland stood his ground.
